Gross Things Our Bodies Do and the Science Behind It - Gr. 4-6

Northwest Talent Academy -
NWTA 2026

Calling all future biologists, scientists, and healthcare innovators! Have you ever wondered why your body makes strange noises, develops bumps or rashes, or sometimes smells a little… surprising? In this fascinating science course, students dive into the mysteries of the human body to uncover how and why these things happen. From digestion and tummy aches to skin, senses, and systems, learners explore how our bodies work beneath the surface—and why, despite our differences, human bodies follow many of the same incredible rules. Using inquiry, discussion, and age-appropriate science investigations, students learn to think like real scientists as they replace “gross” with understanding. If you’re curious about how the human body works and aren’t afraid to ask big (and slightly messy) questions, this class is for you!

METTE M SEVERSON

Hi! My name is Mette Severson, and I am a Nursing student at the College of Saint Benedict. I have worked with NWTA for the past seven years and enjoy making connections and encouraging students! I have traveled quite a bit and have always loved learning about how the human body works! I am excited to help students learn more about the amazing wonders of anatomy and how our complex body systems work together!

Kristin Sarpal

Hi everyone, my name is Kristin Sarpal, and I have been a nurse for almost 30 years. I have taken care of all kinds of patients of different ages and all over the world. Some of my favorite things are what we will be talking about in class -the functions of the human body and simply how amazing it is.

I live in Big Lake, and my husband is a doctor. We have two kids and one granddaughter as well as our cats Poppy and Muchi. My favorite things are baking, reading, sports and traveling. I have always loved science and think if you are curious about why our bodies do some of the gross weird things it does, this is something we can explore together.
