Do you love math, a bit of friendly competition, and hands-on challenges? Come practice your multiplication fact fluency in a high energy, game focused class. Fact fluency is important because it forms the building blocks for higher-level math concepts. When a child masters their math facts, these concepts will be significantly easier and the student will be better equipped to solve them faster. But, why sit with worksheets when you can practice with friends? You’ll leave this class ready to take on your family and friends in games that will help you prepare for next year’s math challenges, but more importantly, won’t leave you needing a nap.
We will finish each class with a hands-on STEM challenge to form connections and challenge our critical thinking skills. Competition, multiplication, and a bit of creative engineering….sounds like a great week to me!
My name is Brenna Lavalier-Kortenkamp (Mrs. Lava-kamp) and I am a STEM teacher at Pinewood Elementary in the Monticello School District. I currently reside in Big Lake with my husband and three children. I attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a degree in Elementary and Middle Level Education, Grades 1-8, with a minor in Broadfield Social Studies. I completed my Masters Degree in Teaching and Learning from Saint Mary’s University and completed a National Certificate for STEM Teaching last summer. During my twenty-plus years of teaching, I have taught second through fifth grades, spent a year as an intervention specialist and am now loving the many opportunities of collaboration, critical thinking and creativity students in STEM are able to explore.
